Song of the Week

Chopin Waltz No.1 Op.18 "Grand Waltz brilliant"
Instrumental.

This is one of the songs that my dear friend Bethany, if I remember correctly, has to memorize. *Insert awe-struck whistle here* She can do it, though - she's amazing.
Also, watch the guy's face as he plays. Isn't he cute? :P

Suffering

A lot of people ask this question. Mostly unbelievers in an attempt to smear God's name, but even Christians have asked this before - I know I have.

The question is: Why do people suffer? Or Why is there so much suffering in the world?

I'm going to try to answer this here. I doubt I will be able to answer it in full, but perhaps I will shed a tiny bit of light on what is considered one of the bigger questions.

1) Broad Scale: The World of Suffering

Romans 8:19-22 - "For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now."

Why is the whole creation groaning? Why is the whole creation suffering?

Genesis 3:17-19 - "And to Adam he said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife
and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, ‘You shall not eat of it,’ cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life; thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you; and you shall eat the plants of the field. By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”

The ground was cursed because of Adam. We can ask, why? What did Adam have to do with the whole of creation? Well, the answer to that is in the Bible as well.

Genesis 1:26-31 - "Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food. And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so. And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day."

God gave man dominion over every other created thing. Dominion means mastery. That means that Adam was responsible for all of creation - he was the master, placed by God, and all creation was subjected to Adam. Because Adam sinned, everything he had dominion over - i.e. EVERYTHING - was corrupted and stained. Suffering in the natural world comes because the whole creation is twisted by sin. Things decay, things suffer, because of sin.

2) Narrow Scale: Personal Suffering

Here are a few points to consider in answer to the question, why do people suffer?

First Question: Who?

God sends us trials
In order for us to understand why trials come, we have to know Who they come from. Let's look at some verses that talk about God sending affliction and testing us. (All emphasis mine.)

Psalm 66:10 - "For you, O God, have tested us; you have tried us as silver is tried."
Zechariah 13:9  - "And I will put this third into the fire, and refine them as one refines silver, and test them as gold is tested. They will call upon my name, and I will answer them. I will say, ‘They are my people’; and they will say, ‘The Lord is my God.’”
1 Thessalonians 2:4 - "but just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, so we speak, not to please man, but to please God who tests our hearts."
Psalm 119:75 - "I know, O Lord, that your rules are righteous, and that in faithfulness you have afflicted me."
Isaiah 30:20 - "And though the Lord give you the bread of adversity and the water of affliction, yet your Teacher will not hide himself anymore, but your eyes shall see your Teacher."
Isaiah 48:10 - "Behold, I have refined you, but not as silver; I have tried you in the furnace of affliction."
Micah 4:6 - "In that day, declares the Lord, I will assemble the lame and gather those who have been driven away and those whom I have afflicted;"
Nahum 1:12 - "Thus says the Lord, “Though they are at full strength and many, they will be cut down and pass away. Though I have afflicted you, I will afflict you no more."

So, in light of these verses we know that God sends us trials. I could go into more about God's sovereignty and His ordering of the world, but these verses will suffice. Now that we know Who, we can ask why.  Here are some answers.

Second Question: Why?

1) God sends us trials for His own sake, for His own glory. Isaiah 48:10-11 - "Behold, I have refined you, but not as silver; I have tried you in the furnace of affliction. For my own sake, for my own sake, I do it, for how should my name be profaned? My glory I will not give to another."

God says it is for His name's sake and for the sake of His praise. When we go through a trial, Who is the only One Who can bring us out of it? Is that not God? Can we ever trust ourselves? Is our own strength enough? No; our own strength is not strength at all.

2) God sends us trials to punish us for our sin. Jeremiah 9:7-9 - "Therefore thus says the Lord of hosts: “Behold, I will refine them and test them, for what else can I do, because of my people? Their tongue is a deadly arrow; it speaks deceitfully; with his mouth each speaks peace to his neighbor, but in his heart he plans an ambush for him. Shall I not punish them for these things? declares the Lord, and shall I not avenge myself on a nation such as this?"

I can think of a small example in my own life. A very small example.
I was storming through the house in a temper (I forget what about now, so don't ask. All I remember is that it made me really, really mad.), ignoring the whisperings of the Holy Spirit in my head. I knew I was doing wrong, but I was storming through the house anyway. All of a sudden I stubbed my pinky toe really hard. (See? I told you it was small. Keep reading though.) It took my mind off my anger just long enough for me to realize how stupid and sinful I was being. I confessed to God while rubbing my poor little pinky toe.

Did God cause me to stub my toe? Yes, yes He did - He is in control of even little things like that. It was a little thing, but it was enough to turn my heart to repentance. So, yes, God sends us trials to punish us - He sends us a "wake-up call". And praise Him for it!

3) God sends us trials to refine us. (Isaiah 48:10) Daniel 11:33-35 - "And the wise among the people shall make many understand, though for some days they shall stumble by sword and flame, by captivity and plunder. When they stumble, they shall receive a little help. And many shall join themselves to them with flattery, and some of the wise shall stumble, so that they may be refined, purified, and made white, until the time of the end, for it still awaits the appointed time."

How can something be refined, or purified, unless it goes through some heat? How can you get the dirt out of the floor without scrubbing it? (Talking from the perspective of one who lives in a house with eight other people, and five dogs. A lot of dirt gets tracked, although Mom has plans to change that...)

4) God sends us trials so that we may become steadfast in the faith. James 1:2-4 - "Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing."
James 1:12 - "Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him."

How does faith grow? It cannot grow if there is nothing to feed it. Someone who does not suffer, never has to hope. Someone with an easy life never grows faith. Faith comes from suffering. Is it not so?

5) God sends us trials so that we may share Christ's sufferings. 1 Peter 4:12-14 - "Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice insofar as you share Christ's sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed. If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you."

Who has suffered more than Christ? Are we not called to share in His sufferings? Is a servant greater than his Master?

6) We must be careful to examine ourselves to see whether or not our suffering is for Christ's name, or because of our sin. 1 Peter 4:15 - "But let none of you suffer as a murderer or a thief or an evildoer or as a meddler."

What gain do we receive when we suffer because we have sinned?

7) We must glorify God in our suffering. 1 Peter 4:16-19 - "Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in that name. For it is time for judgment to begin at the household of God; and if it begins with us, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God? And “If the righteous is scarcely saved, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?” Therefore let those who suffer according to God's will entrust their souls to a faithful Creator while doing good."

1 Thessalonians 5:18 "give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you."

All circumstances. Good and bad. God does not delight in our suffering, but we ought to thank Him for all circumstances - when we are suffering through a trial, we are still in God's perfect will. God never forgets His perfect plan which He executes for our good and His glory. He never forgets about us. Hebrews 2 speaks of that - Jesus can help us in our temptations because He was tempted; Jesus relates to us in everything - we can cast our cares upon Him, truly. When we suffer, we can rest in Him, knowing that He suffered too, and for us at that. What a faithful God we have. What a glorious God we serve.

Praise God!

Christian Character

Here's the question. What is Christian character? Is there a difference between Christian character and regular ol' morality? How should a Christian think? Act? Speak? Live?

Before knowing the "how", we must get the "why" down.

Why are we called to greater things than the rest of the world?

2 Peter 1:3-7 - "His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire. For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love."

Why must we devote ourselves to greater things? Because we have escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire. This is the thing. We have been saved out of our former sinfulness. Christ has redeemed us; our only response is to be like Him. We are called to be like Christ.
1 Corinthians 4:16 - "I urge you, then, be imitators of me."
1 Corinthians 11:1 - "Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ."
Ephesians 5:1 - "Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children."
1 Thessalonians 1:6 - "And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you received the word in much affliction, with the joy of the Holy Spirit,"
Hebrews 6:12 - "So that you may not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises."

How can we be like Christ unless we apply to our lives what the Word of God teaches us?

1 Corinthians 13:4-7 - "Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things."

Try something for me. Take out the word "love" and replace it with "Jesus". Does it fit? That's why elsewhere in the Bible it states that "God is love."

1 John 4:7-11 - "Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another."

1 Corinthians 13:13 - "So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love."

Why is love the greatest? Because it will continue for eternity. Faith and hope will find their answers. Faith is looking for things unseen - they will some day be seen. Hope is waiting for things not yet fulfilled - they will be fulfilled. Love is the only one of these three that will continue on in Heaven - God will show His love for us, and we will show our love for God, now able to praise Him continually without hindrance from sin.

Knowing all of this was important in the light of how Christians should act. Now we'll go on.

How can we have Christian character?

First, let's look at these passages which talk about what we must do. The only way to find out how we can develop Christ-like character is to search the Word that God wrote out for us - we can't learn about what Christ would have us do without studying the Scriptures.

Ephesians 6:10-18 - "Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints..."

Click here for a more in-depth look at the Armor of God.

Philippians 2:12-16 - "Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure. Do all things without grumbling or questioning, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain."

Philippians 1:27 - "Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel,"

Philippians 2:2-8 - "complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross."

Colossians 3:2 - "Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth."

Colossians 3:5-17: - "Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. On account of these the wrath of God is coming.  In these you too once walked, when you were living in them.  But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth.  Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator. Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free; but Christ is all, and in all. Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him."

Colossians 4:2 - "Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving."

Colossians 4:5,6 - "Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person."

Here is the list I have put together. Be mindful that this is not some sort of legalistic "checklist" to follow in order to be like Christ. We can only be like Christ by the grace of God, which cannot be found through what we do, but only through what God has done. The verses above show much more than what I have compiled here, but this will do for now. My hope in writing this list out is that you will read it and think about the scriptures even more.
Don't become a legalist because of me, is all I'm sayin'. ;)

1) Fight for God, in His name and for His glory. Do not be afraid to stand against the wiles of the devil - lift up your shield of faith! It will defend you against those fiery darts every time.
2) Do not grumble or question. Be blameless and innocent, not looking for "your rights".
3) Be "Lights in the World". To eyes used to darkness, light hurts sometimes. But it reveals so much. Do not be afraid to be a letter from Christ, a living witness to His wondrous works of salvation and grace.
4) Live in such a way that is worthy of the gospel of Christ. Do not act ashamed of the gospel. Apply Christ's message to every aspect of your life - politics, money, health...none of it should be outside of your Christianity. If you are a Christian, you are a Christian every moment. Act like it.
5) Stand firm with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel. Believers are called to be a body. The body of Christ.
6) Practice humility. Remember Christ, who did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped.
7) Set your mind on things of God, not on things of earth. Don't let this world take your mind off of what is most important.
8) Put to death what is earthly in you. Don't hold on to things that you know are displeasing to Christ. Cut them out. Put them to death.
9) Forgive others. As the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. No grudges allowed.
10) Put on Love.
11) Let the peace of Christ rule in your heart. Don't stir up trouble for the sake of trouble.
12) Be thankful to God. God is great and greatly to be praised. We cannot thank Him enough.
13) Teach and admonish one another - study the word of Christ! You cannot teach if you do not know.
14) Continue steadfastly in prayer. Our freedom to pray to God came at a heavy price. Christ died a horrible death so that we might have fellowship with God. Why would we waste any opportunity to speak with God and thank Him for the gift of being able to speak with Him??
15) Walk in wisdom. Study the Word of God. You won't find wisdom anywhere else.
16) Make the best use of the time. The day is coming when time will be no more.
17) Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt. None of us has any right to condemn anyone else - we are saved by the grace of God, through no merit of our own. We forget that quite easily.

One last word. Character comes only with time, with God sanctifying us, and making us more like Himself. As our relationship with God grows, so will our character. Have faith.

Hey All Four of My Fans,

You're probably wondering what happened to my scathing wit and wisdom. Where'd it go? Why is Linda not showering her sense all over us, you ask? Well, it is because of a word that I have come to know quite personally: renovations. (The horror! Ack! *Sounds of howling, and all those other scary and obvious things that go on in a horror movie*.)

Why should renovations stop my posts? Well, because.

You know the feeling you get when you're driving someone else's car? Especially if that car is a super-sweet, your-absolute-favourite car? In the perfect colour, with not a scratch on it's surface? No rust? (Get the picture? I'll move on.)

You don't want to see any harm come to it. You drive two kilometers (or miles...) under the speed limit, just in case. And you breath a huge sigh of relief when it's off your hands, and your conscience. Even though it was fun to drive, you felt a surface-level of panic the entire time.

I'm feeling a fraction of that right now. BECAUSE, my computer is not hooked up to the internet. (A twenty year old who is not connected to the internet? THAT is a horror-story in itself. I should write a horror-autobiography. With some hyperbole, of course. Everyone loves hyperbole.)

Since my computer is "offline", I am forced to check my email/surf the 'net on other people's comps. Namely, Dad's and Daniel's. They are the only ones connected. (Although, Pat hooked his up today. I'm coming for you, Patrick. Watch your back....so I can go on your computer while you strain your neck.)

All this to say, my computer is my thinking place. When I write a blog, it's on my own computer because I know where all of my references are, where that specific quote I saved is hiding...I can't do that on Daniel's computer. All I can do is tell you that my regular posts will return as soon as my computer is back...until then, it'll be mostly Songs of The Week. Which, in retrospect, are probably equally entertaining. At least, they sound better.

Song of the Week

BarlowGirl: "Here's My Life"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KEvVx82_bkA

Once again I said my goodbyes
To those who I love most
My heart feels that familiar pain
As I long for home
'Cause this road is hard
When I feel so far

God I'm crying out tonight
'Cause I've given You my life
But I'm tired and I'm missing what's behind
So once more here's my life

On the day that You called my name
All that I knew changed
I found when I said yes that I'd never be the same
Though the call is hard
You are worth it all

God I'm crying out tonight
'Cause I've given You my life
But I'm tired and I'm missing what's behind
So once more

Even when the tears are falling
When I find I fear the calling
You remind me
Words You've spoken over my life
Promises I've yet to see
You comfort me

God I'm crying out tonight
'Cause I've given You my life
But I'm tired and I'm missing what's behind
So once more, here's my life

Song of the Week

Casting Crowns: What if His People Prayed
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SNdxdCK-wiA

What if the armies of the Lord
Picked up and dusted off their swords
Vowed to set the captives free
And not let satan have one more

What if the church, for heaven's sake
Finally stepped up to the plate
Took a stand upon God's promise
And stormed hell's rusty gates

Chorus:
What if His people prayed
And those who bear His name
Would humbly seek His face
And Turn from their own ways

And what would happen if we prayed
For those raised up to lead the way
Then maybe kids in school could pray
And unborn children see light of day

What if the life that we pursue
Came from a hunger for the truth
What if the family turned to Jesus
Stopped asking Oprah what to do

(Chorus)

He said that they would hear
His promise has been made
He'll answer loud and clear
If only we would pray

If My people called by My name
If they'll humble themselves and pray
If My people called by My name
If they'll humble themselves and pray

I've Been Tagged

Apparently there is a game of tag going on in the blogger world. Who knew? I didn't, until about...5 seconds ago!

So, what are the rules? I've forgotten. Drat! Now I have to open a new window, go back to Mom's spot, find the rules, and post them here! How much work is that? Especially for someone who would rather be sleeping.

Le Rules:

1. Link to the person who tagged you. Check.
2. Post the rules on your blog. Check.
3. Write six random things about yourself. Not done yet, but I will.
4. Tag sixish people at the end of your post. I can't. Everyone I know has been tagged already.
5. Let each person know he or she has been tagged. ....
6. Let the tagger know when your entry is up. I'm a rebel. Mom will find out through Feedblitz. :P

Le Randomness:

1. I want to learn Gaelic and go to Scotland. (2 in one! What a rebel!)
2. I won a beginner game in Minesweeper in 3 seconds once.
3. I used to be addicted to Minesweeper. Heh heh.
4. Hot foods are my favourite foods.
5. I actually want to learn pretty much every language out there. (German, Adeena? Come on. I am so there.)
6. I love tea.

There. The six (or seven...counting the two in one...) things are written.

Now, this is the part where people usually tag other people. I'll do my best, but I'm not on my own computer...there's no familiar ground. All the things I have in my favourites are not here. They're all Daniel's favourites. Sigh...

(Adeena, Mom, Sarah, consider yourselves tagged. And Heather and Rachel, when you FINALLY join blogdom, consider yourselves tagged. It will give you your first post. Instead of having to think and think and think about what you're going to write. Unless that is just the type of thing I do. Oh, one more...YOU, right there, yes you. You're tagged.)

I have to put up another song of the week! It's been ages! :0
