In Defense of Christians Celebrating Christmas II: The Argument from Jeremiah 10

The argument based on Jeremiah 10 is interesting.

Well-meaning people state that Christians should not have Christmas trees, because Jeremiah 10 explicitly says it is against God to do so.

Back up. It does?

A tree from the forest is cut down
and worked with an axe by the hands of a craftsman.
They decorate it with silver and gold;
they fasten it with hammer and nails
so that it cannot move. (Jeremiah 10:3-4 ESV)

Hmmm. At first glance it does appear to be against putting up a Christmas tree. But we have to look closer and delve into the context:

Thus says the LORD:
“Learn not the way of the nations,
nor be dismayed at the signs of the heavens
because the nations are dismayed at them,
for the customs of the peoples are vanity.
A tree from the forest is cut down
and worked with an axe by the hands of a craftsman.
They decorate it with silver and gold;
they fasten it with hammer and nails
so that it cannot move.
Their idols are like scarecrows in a cucumber field,
and they cannot speak;
they have to be carried,
for they cannot walk.
Do not be afraid of them,
for they cannot do evil,
neither is it in them to do good.”
There is none like you, O LORD;
you are great, and your name is great in might.
Who would not fear you, O King of the nations?
For this is your due;
for among all the wise ones of the nations
and in all their kingdoms
there is none like you.
They are both stupid and foolish;
the instruction of idols is but wood!
Beaten silver is brought from Tarshish,
and gold from Uphaz.
They are the work of the craftsman and of the hands of the goldsmith;
their clothing is violet and purple;
they are all the work of skilled men.
But the LORD is the true God;
he is the living God and the everlasting King.
At his wrath the earth quakes,
and the nations cannot endure his indignation.
(Jeremiah 10:2-10 ESV)

Do you see what I see? (Said the king to the people everywhere....)

It's not talking about Christmas trees at all, but idol worship. It wasn't just that these wicked people were cutting down a tree and decorating it. They were cutting down a tree, fashioning it into an idol, decorating it with choice valuables, and worshiping and praying to this block of wood.

God is the only True God. He alone created the heavens and the earth, and everything in them; He alone can move to save His people. He alone is the Living God.

If Christmas trees were idols, then I would agree that Christians should not have them in their houses. But they're not idols. They are a piece of fun during the Christmas season. And they smell nice (at least the real ones...sigh...).

  1. ...not to mention, I'd rather not uphold doctrines that resemble the Jehovah's Witnesses or support anything that would have the ACLU and atheists dancing in the streets.

    Blessings to you and yours this Christmas, Br'er Shaygetz

  2. I am SO SORRY about the tree. Mea Culpa. Maybe next year we can get a REAL TREE.

    If people think Christmas decorations are evil, they ought to rethink any sort of decorations. Do they hang art on their walls? Do they enjoy flower arrangements? Do they paint or wallpaper or scrapbook? All of these activities are a reflection of a Beautiful God who created great variety and beauty. We are like Him when we are creative and make our surroundings beautiful.

  3. "Do not be afraid of them,
    for they cannot do evil,
    neither is it in them to do good."

    I think the "Christmas trees are pagan and evil!" people conveniently ignore that portion of the scripture.

    According to their own argument (saying Jeremiah 10 describes Christmas trees) Christmas trees are not evil, because it is not in them to do good or evil.

    I finally got around to reading what you are all riled up about, and all I have to say is: *facepalm*

  4. Good one. :D We are free to do what we want! (Right mom?) I however chose to get a fake tree because somehow real ones commit suicide in my house.

    I am thankful that we live in this Country where we can make our homes pretty, whatever the occasion may be.
